Literary Culture

I am particularly interested in the literature of medieval Ireland from c. 900 – c. 1200. I have published widely on religious literature – sermons, theological tracts, doctrinal and devotional verse, both in Latin and the vernacular – and on various aspects of the educational culture which informed the composition and interpretation of medieval Irish narrative literature and poetry. The image on this page is the beginning of a Middle Irish poem on idolatry which I am currently editing and translating. This poem is preserved in Royal Irish Academy MS 23 N 10, and the image is reproduced by kind permission of the Royal Irish Academy and the Irish Script on Screen Project hosted by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.
